India have won three of the ten men’s T20 World Cups, more than any other side, and they lead most of the T20 World Cup records on this page too. The data covers 334 matches from the first game on 11 Sep 2007 to the 2026 final on 8 Mar 2026.
Further down: every final in order, a titles count, the batters and bowlers with the biggest tournament hauls, record team scores at both ends, the heaviest margins and a win-loss table for each nation. One caveat applies throughout. Afghanistan’s games were never released in the open ball-by-ball data, so neither their results nor their players appear in any list.
T20 World Cup Winners List: Ten Finals
The first final, at Johannesburg in 2007, set the tone: India beat Pakistan by 5 runs. Pakistan won the next one in 2009, beating Sri Lanka by 8 wickets at Lord’s. England (2010) and West Indies (2012) followed, and Sri Lanka took the title in 2014 by beating India at Mirpur.
West Indies became the first two-time winners in 2016, beating England by 4 wickets at Eden Gardens. Australia won in Dubai in 2021, beating New Zealand, and England matched West Indies on two titles by beating Pakistan at Melbourne in 2022.
India then won the last two. They beat South Africa by 7 runs at Kensington Oval in 2024, and New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in 2026, the biggest margin in runs of any final. That makes the all-time count India 3, England 2, West Indies 2, and one each for Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia. India also have the best record at the tournament: 39 wins in 56 matches, a 70.9 per cent win rate.

Highest Run Scorers and Leading Wicket Takers
Virat Kohli (India) is the highest run scorer in T20 World Cup history as far as this data runs, with 1,218 runs at 60.90. He was the leading scorer of both the 2014 and 2022 editions, reached fifty 14 times and has collected 7 match awards, a tournament record. Rohit Sharma (India), with 1,137, is second, and England’s Jos Buttler is third with 1,061, the latter scoring at 145.74 per hundred balls.
The highest single innings is 123 off 58 balls by Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) against Bangladesh at Pallekele in Sep 2012. Chris Gayle (West Indies) made 117 in the very first match in 2007 and is the only batter in the top run list with two hundreds.
Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh) leads the wicket list with 47, ahead of Adil Rashid (England) on 42 and Adam Zampa (Australia) on 40. Zampa’s average of 13.97 is outstanding for a bowler with that many wickets. Ajantha Mendis (Sri Lanka) holds the best figures, 6/8 against Zimbabwe in Sep 2012. The most wickets in one edition is 16, by Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka), listed as PWH de Silva, in 2021.
Team Totals, Collapses and How to Read These Records
Sri Lanka’s 260/6 against Kenya in 2007 is still the highest total, and their 172-run win in that game is the biggest margin. Recent editions have brought it close: India made 256/4 against Zimbabwe at Chennai and 255/5 in the 2026 final. Five of the top six totals came in 2026.
At the other end, the Netherlands were bowled out for 39 by Sri Lanka in 2014, and Uganda also made 39 against West Indies in 2024. Lowest totals count all-out innings only.
Edition sizes vary a lot, from 25 matches in 2010 and 2012 to 49 in 2026, so career totals favour players from the bigger recent editions. South Africa have the second-best win rate, 67.3 per cent, but no titles. For the 50-over event, see the Cricket World Cup records; for every T20I, see T20I records. The women’s event has its own Women’s T20 World Cup page.
