Most Runs in T20 World Cup History and by Edition

Covers 334 Men's T20 World Cup matches from Sep 2007 to Mar 2026. Afghanistan matches are not in the open data set.

Virat Kohli of India has the most runs in T20 World Cup matches in this record book: 1,218 runs in 31 innings, averaging 60.90. His India teammate Rohit Sharma is second with 1,137, and Jos Buttler (England) third with 1,061.

The tables draw on 334 Men’s T20 World Cup matches, spread over 10 editions between Sep 2007 and Mar 2026. Each edition also gets its own top 10. The open data has no Afghanistan matches, which is why some edition match counts are lower than the real schedule.

T20 World Cup Most Runs: The All-Time Leaders Covered

Kohli’s lead rests on consistency more than size. He has 14 fifties and no hundred, yet his average of 60.90 is far above anyone else in the top 10. Rohit needed 41 innings for his 1,137, against Kohli’s 31.

Buttler and Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) also have four-figure totals, 1,061 and 1,016, with one hundred each. Chris Gayle (West Indies) is fifth on 965 and is the only player in the list with 2 hundreds. He also hit 63 sixes, the most at the tournament.

Five teams have four players each in the top 25: India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan. India’s four are Kohli, Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav and Yuvraj Singh. See the T20 World Cup records page for winners and results.
