These Test cricket records come from 895 men’s Tests, starting on 19 Dec 2001 and running to 9 Sep 2026, each one logged ball by ball. Joe Root (England) leads the run list with 14,278, and James Anderson (England) leads the wicket list with 682.
Careers that started before Dec 2001 only count from that date, so some long careers look shorter here than in full career lists. Afghanistan’s Tests are missing from the open source data, which is why no Afghan scores or results show up.
How to Read These Test Cricket Records
Every list below is drawn from the same 895 Tests. Runs and wickets are added up over a player’s matches in that window. The highest scores table looks at single innings, and an asterisk means not out. For best bowling, more wickets always rank higher, with runs conceded used to separate equal hauls, which is why 10/119 beats 9/127.
The fastest hundreds table is about the ball count when the batter reached 100, not where the innings finished. Lowest totals include only completed all-out innings, so a declaration or an innings cut short by rain cannot appear.
You can sort any table by clicking its headings. For the same lists in the shorter formats, open the ODI records and T20I records pages, or the combined international cricket records.

Most Runs and Hundreds in Test Cricket
Root’s 14,278 runs put him well clear of Alastair Cook (England) on 12,472. Root also has the most hundreds, 41, ahead of Steve Smith (Australia) on 37. Smith has the best average among the top five run scorers, 56.00, though Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) averages 61.07 in his 84 Tests covered here.
At the top of the individual list stands Brian Lara (West Indies), unbeaten on 400 against England in Antigua in Apr 2004. All 15 entries in that table are triple hundreds. The most recent are Harry Brook’s 317 for England at Multan in Oct 2024 and PWA Mulder’s 367 not out for South Africa against Zimbabwe in Jul 2025.
Ben Stokes (England) has hit 138 sixes, the most in the data, and Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) made the fastest hundred, in 54 balls against Australia on 20 Feb 2016. McCullum appears three times in the fastest hundreds table.
Most Wickets and Best Bowling in Tests
England’s new-ball pair top the wicket list. Anderson has 682 and Stuart Broad (England) 604, with Nathan Lyon (Australia) third on 571 as the leading spinner. Among the top 20 wicket takers, R Ashwin (India) has the most five-wicket hauls, 37, and the best average among the top five, 24.12.
The best innings figures belong to Ajaz Patel (New Zealand), whose all-ten haul cost 119 runs at Mumbai against India in Dec 2021. HMRKB Herath (Sri Lanka) and KA Maharaj (South Africa) are next with 9/127 and 9/129. No eight-wicket haul in the table came cheaper than Broad’s 8/15 against Australia in Aug 2015.
For one-innings bowling across every format, see best bowling figures.
Highest Totals, Lowest Totals and Biggest Wins
Top of the totals list is 823/7, made by England at the Multan Cricket Stadium in Oct 2024; Pakistan’s 765/6 in Karachi (Feb 2009) is next. Sri Lanka own four of the top 15.
The basement belongs to West Indies, who managed only 27 against Australia in Kingston in Jul 2025. Ireland’s 38 at Lord’s and Sri Lanka’s 42 at Kingsmead follow. Newlands in Cape Town hosts four of the 15 lowest totals.
Five Tests were won by more than 400 runs, led by South Africa’s 492-run win at Johannesburg in Mar 2018 and Australia’s 491-run win at the WACA in Dec 2004. Team totals across formats are on highest and lowest team totals.
Questions about Test records
Who has the most runs in Test cricket?
In the 895 Tests covered here since Dec 2001, JE Root (England) is first with 14,278 from 309 trips to the crease, averaging 50.45. AN Cook (England) is second with 12,472 and SPD Smith (Australia) third with 10,920. Anything scored before Dec 2001 sits outside these totals.
Which bowler has taken the most Test wickets?
JM Anderson (England) leads with 682 wickets at 26.41. SCJ Broad (England) has 604 and NM Lyon (Australia) 571. Among spinners, Lyon and R Ashwin (India), on 532, lead the way.
What is the highest individual score in Test cricket?
It is 400 not out by BC Lara (West Indies), a 582-ball innings at the Antigua Recreation Ground in Apr 2004. ML Hayden (Australia) scored 380 against Zimbabwe in Oct 2003, while DPMD Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) made 374 at Colombo in Jul 2006.
What is the biggest win in Test cricket?
By runs, South Africa beat Australia by 492 runs at Johannesburg on 30 Mar 2018. Australia’s 491-run win over Pakistan at Perth in Dec 2004 is next.
What is the follow-on in Test cricket?
In a five-day Test, if the side batting second finishes its first innings at least 200 runs behind, the other captain can make it bat again straight away. It is a choice, not a requirement, and the trailing side then has to bat again to avoid an innings defeat.
