Highest Individual Score in Cricket: Top 10 by Format

Covers 7,029 men's matches from Dec 2001 to Sep 2026 with ball-by-ball records. Afghanistan matches are not in the open data set.

The highest individual score in cricket in this record book is Brian Lara’s unbeaten 400 for West Indies, made against England at St John’s, Antigua, in a Test starting 10 Apr 2004. He faced 582 balls.

This page ranks the ten biggest innings in each men’s format: Tests, ODIs and T20Is. The lists come from 7,029 internationals with ball-by-ball data, spanning Dec 2001 to Sep 2026. Anything played earlier than Dec 2001 is outside the data, so these are not all-time lists. Afghanistan’s games are missing too, since the open source data leaves them out.

How the Highest Individual Score in Cricket Is Ranked

Each entry is one batter’s score in a single innings. An asterisk means the batter was not out, so 400* sits above a dismissed 380. Where two scores are equal, both appear. The balls column counts deliveries faced, and the 4s and 6s columns show how the runs came.

Each format gets its own table, because the numbers are not comparable. A Test innings can run for days; an ODI innings is limited to 50 overs and a T20I innings to 20. That is why the Test top ten all sit above 300, the ODI top ten are all 200 or more, and the T20I list tops out at 172.

For the wider picture, browse the Test, ODI and T20I record pages, and the list of fastest centuries for innings measured by speed rather than size.

Test Cricket: Lara's 400* and the Triple Hundreds

Lara’s 400* stands alone at the top. Matthew Hayden (Australia) is next with 380 against Zimbabwe in Oct 2003, and Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) made 374 against South Africa in Jul 2006, off 572 balls.

The newest entry is Wiaan Mulder (South Africa), with 367* against Zimbabwe in Jul 2025. He scored faster than anyone else in the top four, facing 334 balls. Harry Brook (England) reached 317 in the Multan Test of Oct 2024, during England’s 823/7.

Australia have three batters in the Test top ten: Hayden, David Warner with 335* and Michael Clarke with 329*. Virender Sehwag (India) and Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) share ninth place on 319. Sehwag’s came off 304 balls, the fewest of any innings in the Test top ten.

ODIs: Rohit Sharma's 264 and India's Double Centuries

Rohit Sharma (India) made the highest ODI score in the data, 264 from 173 deliveries against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in Nov 2014. He also appears twice more, with 209 and 208*, which makes him the only batter with three entries.

India dominate this table: seven of the ten scores belong to Indian batters, among them Sehwag’s 219, Ishan Kishan’s 210, Shubman Gill’s 208 and Sachin Tendulkar’s 200* against South Africa in Feb 2010. Martin Guptill (New Zealand) is second overall with 237* against West Indies in Mar 2015. Chris Gayle (West Indies) hit 16 sixes in his 215 against Zimbabwe, level with Rohit’s 209 for the most in an innings on the list. More big hitting is on the most sixes page.

T20Is: Finch at the Top, Associates Close Behind

Aaron Finch (Australia) owns the T20I mark, 172 from 76 deliveries against Zimbabwe in Harare in Jul 2018, and his 156 against England in Aug 2013 is fifth. He is the only player with two entries.

The pattern below him is striking. Six of the ten scores come from Associate sides, including Karanbir Singh (Austria) with 164 against Hungary in Jun 2026, Hamza Khan (Rwanda) with 164* in May 2026 and Sahil Chauhan (Estonia), whose 144* took only 41 balls. Phil Salt (England) hit 141* versus South Africa in Sep 2025, and Glenn Maxwell (Australia) 145* against Sri Lanka in Sep 2016.

Women’s scores are listed separately on the women’s international records page.
