The highest run chase in ODI cricket in this record book is South Africa’s 438/9 against Australia at The Wanderers, Johannesburg, on 12 Mar 2006, reached with one ball to spare.
Only successful chases count, and chases decided by DLS are left out. Men’s matches from Dec 2001 through Sep 2026 are covered, with Afghanistan absent because their games are not in the open data. Read on for the top ODI chases, India’s best, and the biggest chases in T20Is and Tests.
What the ODI Chase List Shows
South Africa’s 438/9 sits far above everything else. The next best is Netherlands’ 374/6 against Scotland at Dundee on 12 Jun 2025, an Associate match, and then South Africa again with 372/6 against Australia at Durban in Oct 2016. Every other chase in the list falls short of 372.
Australia are the side most often beaten by a big chase: seven of the chases in the main table came against them, including the top one. England are the most frequent chasers, with six entries, and South Africa have four. Most chases go deep, with the winning runs often coming in the 49th or 50th over.
The exceptions are worth a look. India’s 362/1 at Jaipur took only 43.3 overs, and England’s 337/4 at Pune in Mar 2021 came in the same number of overs. For the biggest totals of any kind, batting first or second, open highest and lowest team totals.
