Just 54 balls: that is all Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) needed for the fastest century in Test cricket in this record book, against Australia at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, on 20 Feb 2016. He went on to 145.
Each hundred below is ranked by the deliveries used to get there, drawing on 895 men’s and 24 women’s Test matches between Dec 2001 and Sep 2026. Older hundreds from before the data starts are not ranked, and No Afghanistan Test is counted, because none appears in the open data set. You will also find the quickest Test fifties, India’s fastest hundreds and the women’s list.
How the Fastest Test Hundreds Are Measured
Every entry is ranked by one number: balls faced from the first delivery of the innings to the moment the batter reached 100. Runs scored after that do not matter for the ranking, which is why Misbah-ul-Haq (Pakistan) sits second with 56 balls even though he finished on 101, while Brian Lara (West Indies) needed 77 balls on his way to 216 at Multan.
Only three hundreds came in fewer than 69 balls. McCullum’s 54 leads, Misbah’s 56 at Abu Dhabi on 30 Oct 2014 is next, and Adam Gilchrist (Australia) made 57 against England at the WACA on 14 Dec 2006. The next mark is 69 balls, shared by David Warner against India in Jan 2012 and Travis Head against England on 21 Nov 2025. Ties are listed by date, so equal ball counts are not split by any other rule.

Who Appears Most: McCullum, Warner and the Perth Effect
Two batters own three entries each in the men’s list. McCullum hit hundreds in 54, 74 and 78 balls, the last two inside a few weeks in late 2014. Warner (Australia) reached three figures in 69, 78 and 82 balls. Australian batters fill seven places in all, and New Zealand batters fill six.
Perth is the standout city. The WACA Ground hosted four of these hundreds, by Gilchrist twice, Warner and Chris Gayle (West Indies, 70 balls), and Head added a fifth at Perth Stadium. Australia were also the side on the receiving end more than any other team, conceding six of the quick hundreds, including the top two.
Fast scoring has not faded with time. Harry Brook (England) needed 80 balls at Rawalpindi in Dec 2022, Jamie Smith (England) matched that at Edgbaston on 2 Jul 2025, and Head’s 69 came in Nov 2025.
