Sydney Thunder BBL Records and Stats

Covers 161 BBL matches played by Sydney Thunder from Dec 2011 to Jan 2026.

Sydney Thunder BBL records start with one title, won in 2015-16, and a second final reached in 2024-25. Between and around those peaks, the club has won 64 and lost 91 of its 161 outings from Dec 2011 through Jan 2026.

That works out to 41.3% of decided games. Alex Hales leads the run scorers and the six hitters, Daniel Sams leads the wicket takers, and David Warner has the most hundreds for the club. The Thunder also hold the lowest total in BBL history.

Thunder seasons: a slow start, a title and a final

The first three seasons were hard. The Thunder won 2 of 6 in 2011-12, none of 7 in 2012-13 and 1 of 8 in 2013-14. Two seasons later came the breakthrough: in 2015-16 they won only 4 of 8 games but finished as champions.

Between 2019-20 and 2022-23 the Thunder were at their most consistent, with 8, 8, 9 and 7 wins. The 2024-25 side won 7 of 12 and reached the final, losing to Hobart Hurricanes. The season after fell away to 2 wins from 10.

Head to head, nothing is as lopsided as the Sydney derby. Sydney Sixers have won 19 of 29 meetings and the Thunder only 7, as the Sixers vs Thunder page shows. Oddly, the Thunder have a winning record, 11 to 9, against the league’s most successful team in the Scorchers vs Thunder rivalry. Melbourne Stars are level at 11 each, while Brisbane Heat lead 15 to 8.
