Our IPL Orange Cap list names the top run scorer of every season, from SE Marsh’s 616 runs for Punjab Kings in 2008 to V Suryavanshi’s 776 for Rajasthan Royals in 2026. Every figure comes from the ball-by-ball record of all 1,243 IPL games.
One number sits above the rest: Virat Kohli’s 973 runs for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2016. The next best, Shubman Gill with 890 for GT in 2023, is well short of it. DA Warner of Sunrisers Hyderabad is the only player to top the runs table three times.
Reading the IPL Orange Cap List Season by Season
The winning tally has climbed over time. In the first eight seasons the leader finished between 562 and 733 runs, and DA Warner’s 562 in 2015 is the lowest total to top any season. From 2022 onwards no winner has made fewer than 741: JC Buttler made 863, Shubman Gill 890, V Kohli 741, B Sai Sudharsan 759 and V Suryavanshi 776.
Strike rates tell the same story. SR Tendulkar topped 2010 for Mumbai Indians at 132.62 and MEK Hussey led 2013 for Chennai Super Kings at 129.51. Suryavanshi’s 776 in 2026 came at 237.31, far quicker than any earlier winner on the list. The closest before him was CH Gayle, who struck at 183.13 in 2011 while playing only 12 matches.
Fewer games did not stop some leaders. Marsh needed just 11 matches in 2008, and Warner averaged 69.20 across just 12 games for his 692 in 2019.

Repeat Winners and the Teams Behind Them
Three players have topped the IPL runs table more than once. DA Warner did it three times, in 2015, 2017 and 2019, all for Sunrisers Hyderabad. CH Gayle won back to back in 2011 and 2012 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and V Kohli won in 2016 and again in 2024 for the same side.
By franchise, RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad have four season leaders each. SRH’s fourth is KS Williamson, with 735 runs in 2018. Chennai Super Kings have three: ML Hayden in 2009, Hussey in 2013 and RD Gaikwad in 2021. Gujarat Titans (GT), Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings have two apiece, while Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders (RV Uthappa, 660 in 2014) have one each.
Tables use current team names, so Marsh’s 2008 runs and KL Rahul’s 670 in 2020 sit under Punjab Kings even though the side then played as Kings XI Punjab. You can compare these season peaks with the career totals on our most runs in IPL list.
How the Orange Cap Leaders Are Worked Out
Each row counts runs from every match of that season, playoffs included, while super over runs are ignored. The columns beside the runs show matches (M), batting average and strike rate, so you can see how a total was built: Kohli’s 973 came at an average of 81.08, while Uthappa’s 660 averaged 44.00.
If two batters ever finish level, the official cap can be settled by a tie-break. This list shows the player first on our table and does not claim any official ruling.
